Recommendations for Students:
Every Web 2.0 web-based service requires a username and password to log-in with. Having accounts on several services it can be hard to keep track of all your passwords. We will instruct students on:
  • Choosing safe and secure passwords (Microsoft password checker; advice).
  • A simple mnemonic strategy which generates passwords by incorporating the name of the site, e.g: My mnemonic password for Google is 1 2 beat MmpfGi12b
  • Clipperz (about) - This service stores all your account information in a 'Card' library, in which the user creates a 'Card' for each account they hold. The passwords are encrypted when put onto the system. It can hold a range of account log-ins from Web-Accounts and Bank Details. We were contacted by Clipperz team following a tweet about their services: Please post websites where direct logins don't work on the Clipperz forum. If you prefer to run Clipperz on the university server, now you can download and install Clipperz Community Edition.

OpenID (Single Sign On) Wikipedia: OpenID

To enthuse students about this, we will have to point out the advantages - potentially gets them away from silo jumping, allowing them to pick and mix from systems they like rather than plump with a set of features from a single provider. However, after consideration, we have decided that OpenID is not yet ready for a major roll-out to students, so while we will document it as a resource, we will not be actively recommending OpenID for the 2008/9 session.
