Based on extensive testing, we find that WetPaint is the best of the free wikis we tested. Most robust solution, navigation is automatically added, editing and appearance are attractive, tagging is good, ad-free education sites available on request. Alternatives:

  • WikiSpaces - Found the editing features of this wiki frustrating and slow. Navigation is fragile and easily broken.
  • PBWiki - Poor navigation (needs to be manually inserted), tagging is cumbersome, unattractive bare bones appearance, counterintuitive to use.
  • Wik.is (about)

Working within the limitations of our first year timetable, we will not be recommending that students use wikis in their own right. However, we will be recommending WetPaint as a possible ePortfolio architecture.
